Pop Princess Dress

Garment

Design

This was a collaboration between me and 0verbit3. We were assigned to design a 70’s inspired princess panel dress. We decided to go for a square neckline with bell sleeves with an elastic cinching it at just above the elbow referencing renaissance sleeves. The color choice with the orange, and the bright blue trim and gold stars was more of a reference to city pop which started in the late 70’s. Hence the Pop Princess Dress.

Patternmaking

We started with a sheath dress with two front and back darts. From there we developed the princess seams for the dress. When it come to fitting, we had to drop the armholes, widen the shoulders, and add more ease to the back, while removing ease from the front as I am a little broad shouldered and well…don’t have any ease necessary for a front bust. Also, had to lengthen the dress as with the pattern as it was, well, that would have made it a mini mini dress. Not something I could wear in public, to say the least. Also, for the bell sleeves , we just made a really large bell sleeve pattern, while making a tunnel to stick an elastic right above my elbow, and making the elastic the length of my bicep measurement. We then flared the skirt out a bit for some drama.
