Tonbi Coat
Garment
Design
This coat is designed after a popular coat from the Taisho era, the Tonbi Coat. I made a few changes like adding extended welt pockets, and the quilted saddle on the back.
Fabrication
For the back saddle I hand quilted in the kame sashiko pattern some beige gabardine wool to several layers of wool filling.
Patternmaking
With the pattern, I started with the free Tonbi coat pattern from Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). I had to clean up the pattern as lot of the seams did not match up. I also added extended welt pockets and removed the inside ticket pocket. I also added the back saddle.
