Michiyuki Vest

Garment

Design

This design began from the square neckline from the Michiyuki Kimono. Beyond that, the design is a departure from the Michiyuki Kimono. It is a princess panel vest. It was also inspired by Boro and Sashiko.

Fabrication

Sashiko! So much Sashiko! I Sashiko embroidered denim scraps to hemp linen. Also, the lining I designed the print myself.

Patternmaking

With the pattern, I started with a vogue 1947 vogue swagger coat that I found on Ebay, which was the same pattern my grandma used for her coat. To get the coat to fit I did have to drop the armhole a bit. I replaced the open faced pockets with single welt pockets as the are a more stable type of pocket. I also added the long rectangular extensions to the coat sleeves found in kimono sleeves.
