Grandma Coat

Garment

Design

The initial inspiration for this garment was the initial inspiration of this entire final line: my grandma’s coat she designed and made back in 1947.

I of course added my own design elements so I wasn’t just copying her coat. I replaced the buttons with black crochet buttons, I added kimono like sleeves, and a back saddle with quilted sashiko in the kame pattern

Fabrication

For the back saddle I hand quilted in the kame sashiko pattern some beige gabardine wool to several layers of wool filling.

Patternmaking

With the pattern, I started with a vogue 1947 vogue swagger coat that I found on Ebay, which was the same pattern my grandma used for her coat. To get the coat to fit I did have to drop the armhole a bit. I replaced the open faced pockets with single welt pockets as the are a more stable type of pocket. I also added the long rectangular extensions to the coat sleeves found in kimono sleeves.
