Arizona Bag
Design
Taking inspiration from the Arizona dessert, I played with pleating, and Shibori dyeing to imitate the rocks from that area
Fabrication
I first accordion fold Shibori dyed the canvas with indigo, then Ne-Maki Shibori dye the canvas orange. After that I hand waxed the canvas to add water resistance by melting, hand painting the melted wax, then smoothing it out with a wooden spatula and a hair dryer. The straps, zippers, and bag binding I dyed teal to match the accordion fold dye which turned out teal when the indigo mixed with the canvas’s original brown color.
Patternmaking
All the pleats. Pleated pockets everywhere. I wanted to allude to the rock structures using pleats throughout most of the pockets. I also added a bag flap, and straps.
